L5/S1 Discectomy...
2 Answers
Hello, I was wondering if anyone can give me a bit of reassurance.
I've suffered with back pain for around 6 years resulting in having the discectomy on 17th November. I was up the next day and have been taking it slowly for the last two and a bit weeks.
Previously I couldn't stand for the length of time it took to make a cup or tea or walk more than 100 meters. I have been really positive as the old pain seemed to have disappeared - it just feels like I've been jabbed in the back a number of times (result of the operation).
I went out at the weekend, not very far, around 20 minutes in Tesco one day and to look at my wedding dress another day and it hurt. It hurt so much and it was the old pain back again. (As I type this I realise what I would say to anyone who was asking my advice) I was told that there might be memory pain, where the nerve takes a while to realise the pressure isn't on it any more but I was so disappointed. I was told before I had the surgery that the greatest risk was that it wouldn't work but I didn't for one minute think that it wouldn't.
I'm just looking for someone to say, "ah, don't worry about it. It hasn't been three weeks yet" Or "it's ok, you've overdone it, go slowly" but only if you mean it :)
I wasn't given any exercises from the physio. I'm 28 year old female and diabetic.
Anyone? :)

I'm not medically trained but am both diabetic and off work for 2.5 years with back trouble, I feel I can offer an opinion. I think that you should speak to a physio,or someone medically trained and take life a bit easier to give your back a chance to heal properly - it does sound like you've done rather a lot. I hope that you feel better very soon.
