When I went into labour at age 16, I had to wait at home 2 days before I was taken to the hospital. My baby did not survive the journey, and I developed complications that I would live with for many years afterwards.

But we can change this for future mothers. Next week, leaders from G8 countries will meet to sign off a new initiative to help women and children access the care and support they need.

As part of a comprehensive initiative to improve the health of mothers and their children around the world, ONE is asking for the G8 to commit to helping to recruit 3.5 million new health workers in countries that need it most. These women would provide concrete, hands-on support for women and make a huge difference.

Petition text:

As part of a comprehensive plan to save mothers, infants and children, please ensure the G8 commits to training an additional 3.5 million healthcare workers by 2015 at the upcoming G8 meeting in Canada.

My case is not unique in Sudan, where I live, and I was determined that no other women should have to suffer alone the way that I had. I became a midwife and since then I’ve dedicated my life to other helping mothers and children.

My work is difficult – I often travel alone and sometimes fear for my safety, but I am determined to help.

It is my sincere hope that you will help too.

Thank you,

Why do people in poverty have so many children? Sorry, I won't sign it.
Im sorry but i agree with another-view, why have so many children when they can barley support thereselves, i wont sign.
I receive regular mailings from Ethiopiad, they look after women with fistulas caused by trying to give birth after female genetic mutilation, they are chucked out of their families when they become doubly incontinent - I support that one.
Are you married?
I agree with the other posters but, unlike them, don't feel the need to apologise for my opinion...
I'm not apologising, MarkRae, merely stating my case.
they really should be concentrating on getting the contraceptive word out there, rather than 3.5m healthcare workers.

I am sorry for what happened to you and your baby, sandy x
No indeed - your post overtook mine. I was referring to the weird habit of including "I'm sorry" when stating an opinion...
