Worth a visit to Docs?
56 Answers
Today is the 3rd day my 6yr old has had a temp (up to 39). She says she has a sore throat but I can't see anything yucky in it which looks like tonsillitus. Once medicine works she is ok but not herself. I don't know whether its worth taking her to GP as they will more than likely say its a virus and won't be able to do anything. What do others think?

OR a cancellation......you can only try......i'd ring and see just in case there is......if not, call this afternoon for her appt.
Good luck x

Dont waste your time or your doc's time either then, tigwig, and see what happens to your daughter in a few days...weekend's now here and surgery shut for most......only saying a 5 minute inspection from the doc is safer all round, just in case it's not viral....
It's your choice....nobody else's....you asked for advice and gave it to you. I would have her checked out personally.
lol........sqad.....did we lose at snooks again? :0) x

Ok thanks again, well I will see if she gets a temp again this aft and if she does will take her. If not then she must be getting better! She last had calpol at 7.40 this morning and is still not hot so hopefully it will stay that way.
Whilst I mention calpol, sqad is the 6 plus stuff better for her as it has 250mg paracetamol per 5ml rather than the 120mg that normal calpol has? Or would it be the same just giving her more of normal calpol instead? I was quite confused reading the bottles yesterday, doesn't take much lol.

Yogi....the NHS cannot and shouldn´t be asked to cope with minor illnesses and like it or not, the parent should take some sensible responsibilities upon themselves and not loading it onto overworked doctors.
Here we have a child of 6 with a temperature of 39degC for 3 days with no signs of bacterial tonsillitis and apparently well with a sensible mother. Yes, in the perfect world it would be NICE for her child to be seen by a doctor for these symptoms........but we are not knee deep in doctors or cash in the NHS to make this a perfect world.

I disagree, sqad and the part about overworked doctors...do me a favour.....we are talking about a 5 minute check up to see if a child has just a virus or something more, as unlikely it sounds.
Did you see annie's post?..... and i know someone who left it late and their child ended up having pneumonia............i do however agree with you, that you cant just go the doctors after 1 or 2 day's when geting these symptoms, but tigwigs daughter is on Day 4 now, and with regular calpol, the temperature is not going down, so just for the amount of time should be enough to warrant further inspection by the Doctor, if only to make sure the child is not suffering from another problem, or needs medication to clear the illness.
Parents are'nt doctors sqad, so of course, the call is theirs........in this case i would take her for an appt, as weekends here....surgery almost certainly shut tommorrow and the childs doctor KNOWS her history.........that is my opinion. :0)

My friends son is just home from hospital after being in the High dependency Unit with a ruptured appendix. He started off with a tummy bug on a Tuesday that just wasn't clearing, they phoned Docs for advice on the Friday as he was still not taking food and very little liquid, were told that it was a violent strain of bu - he was no better on the monday and was complaining of a sore tummy- took him to the doc who thought it was his appendix and sent him to hospital - they started to do keyhole surgery then realised that it had ruptured and he was a very sick little boy - lost loads of fluids and was already dehydrated due to the bug. Not saying anyone did anything wrong here, but it is amazing how things can get out of control really quickly. In my sons case luckily we saw him peeing blood otherwise god knows what could have happened to his kidneys - thankfully all was fine.
