who would you trust/prefer - an elderly, 10 year retired gp with a wealth of experience or a newly qualified, switched-on, up-to-the-minute gp?

For relationship advice, always the older more experienced male. (oh and fish suppers)
boxtops...you missed out NHS Direct;-)
Sorry Eth, am in a giddy nood did not mean to trivialise your genuine question.
Question Author
mamy, fish suppers? i've never had one of those on prescription..
No I didn't sqad, not in my order of preference ;-)
Question Author
mamy, you didn't :)
eth....c´mon....you know AB.....it is a good chance to give age and experience, thinly disguised as sqad....a good kicking...........could perhaps I mention a few names?.......and I could name the one`s that will follow later......;-)
Question Author
absolutely not sqad, i think you already know, without me having to spell it out, how very valued your opinions and advice are here on ab, including myself.
i just found myself thinking about it this morning, mainly down to the two gps himself and me have, but also with you being here on ab and us having these two young medics. i didn't start this with a view to 'sqad bashing' - far from it, so please don't think it is. you know how much you are loved and admired ;o)
My GP is younger than am I <<sigh>> but is qualfied, experienced and very understanding. I asked him recently if he was planning to retire early and, to my great delight, he said 'no'. We have a wonderful patient/doctor relationship and great respect for each other. I always wait until I can have an appontment with him rather than any one of the other 5 in the practice. I suppose it is a bit like having puppy - once they are trained they reward you 10 fold.
My hero GP retired a few months ago, much to my dismay!
Question Author
ttfn, i've heard it said 'get them while their bones are still soft'..:)
lol @ eth or ron :o)
eth...oh! dear oh! dear! you are so sweet and so naive...........good advice? [email protected] see sqad fall on his face is what a discrete (or not so discreet) would like to see.

You soon learn early on in your career, that some people think that the sun shines out of your @rse and other people say that they wouldnt send their cat to see you.
Just watch and read some of the comments that some ABers make about their doctors.
You can´t please all the people all the time, but as long as you can please some of the people some of the time, then you are a success in Medicine.

Do you job as well as you can and pick up your cheque at the end of the month.
Question Author
eth, it's always eth, ron's been banned from using it - and it wasn't in reference to doctors that i heard it ;o)
older - less likely to listen to reason.

I rest my case.
Question Author
well, sqad, you can, and do, rise above it.
hope you're not missing the missus too much, what have you made for dinner?
Evening All - we have 3 Doctors in our Group Practice - Male GP (useless - told me the other week, I have no tonsils, when clearly I do). His wife Mrs. GP, not bad but no bedside manner. Age wise, I think they are both in their 60's.

Third lady GP - extremely good, caring, sits and listens, gets up when you enter the room, apologises for keeping you waiting (and believe me she does). I would say she is in her 30's.

You have to wait 2 weeks for an appointment for the third lady GP.

The other two clowns you can get an appointment within 2 days. I know this is not the original question, but just thought I would throw my two pence worth in. (:0 )
Question Author
we used to have a gp at our surgery, generally known as doctor death due to his total lack of bedside manner. however, when the chips were down you knew you could absolutely rely on him, and he was second to none with the elderly and chronicaly sick.
Question Author
DEN, it's just a general thread on opinions about our gps, they all differ so much don't they?
Sqad - the doctor/patient relationship is the most personal service of all. I went 7 years without even crossing the practice threshold and am paying for it now, bu,t I could not ask more of my GP.
