Dear Sqad - my husband had the misfortune to be badly bitten on his hand by a cat, over four weeks ago, resulting in micro-surgery to remove all the rubbish, a few days in hospital and large doses of anti-biotics which he has only just finished. His system has been thoroughly upset by all this, having been off his food and now needing two or three trips to the bathroom each day.

I suggested a trip to the chemist who supplied a probiotic - have you any suggestions ?
Unfortunately he's one of those people who expect instant results which isn't helping the situation very much and I'd appreciate any ideas - thanks

Sorry about the problem that your husband had, it sounds quite nasty.

<<< having been off his food and now needing two or three trips to the bathroom each day.<<<

By that I gather that he is having diarrhoea, in which case it is almost certainly secondary to the antibiotics and should settle within the next few days. I have to confess that I am not a fan of either probiotics or any other" immune system booster"
and providing that he drinks plenty to combat the diarrhoea, he should pick up quite quickly.

Sorry to sound a bit negative, but your husband is right...it will take time.

thanks Sqad, we're hoping that after a few days things will settle ok, but I wonder how milk and dairy products will impact, even though the anitbiotics are finished. He was given a pretty heavy duty one to combat all the infection, and I remember how milk caused upsets with some over the years - any thoughts ??
Well, I should "go easy" on the dairy products until his G.I tract is back to normal say..3 or 4 days.
Let me know how things progress.
I know nothing about antibiotics but, unfortunately, I know a bit about cat bites. My little 'princess' is fast and ruthless - your husband has my sympathies. I think that most people underestimate how much damage and pain a cat's teeth has the potential to inflict. Have you ever heard of the Dangerous Cat Act?

I hope his tummy settles soon.

Only a cat would bite the hand that feeds it. Now, a dog is all licks and affection...
sandy....LOL

Have you ever heard of a cat mauling a child to death?

;-)

Thanks all - the cat is semi-feral, is supposed to live about three houses away, why it chooses to live in our wood pile when we have 3 dogs [ 2 of them terriers ] and they chase it away every time they're let out of the house I can't explain ... maybe it likes living dangerously !!
