a degree is a privilege not a right :)
(Playing D.A.) - is it because all the wealth is concentrated in England and they can afford to subsidise the rest of us?
and over 60's don't pay either!
The reason we pay prescription fees in England is because a United Kingdom Parliament governs England and under Labour (with a large amount of Scottish and Welsh MP's) voted an increase in the charges for people in England.
Scotland ,Wales and Northern Ireland have their own Parliaments/Assembly's and voted to make it free for their people.
Basically the English are disenfranchised.
it's for those reasons i want to go, and i'd still have to pay it off.
you should always pay your debts

Molly and other may leave the UK after they're finished with their education, some have to leave because there may not be any opportunity's here for them. isn't it better to have them working in another country than scrounging off the state?

Can I just concur with Helen -England set aside £1500 per capita for health as opposed to £1800 per capita in Scotland.
I can see why people in England appear to be aggrieved but no-one is subsidising anyone else.My tax goes into a huge melting post and is divvied up the same as any tax payers is.
If Scotland ,N.Ireland and Wales choose to concentrate on Health as they feel it would save money in the long term-then you can be rest assured that another field is being rigourously tightened.England may have decided to concentrate on Law and Order for example If you feel your contibutions are being mismanaged then lobby your MP.Dont berate other taxpayers and suggest that England are subsiding others as it doesnt hold water -it doesnt happen -I pay the same as you and you and you.
I absolutely agree its not a given right to further your education which in the main benefits you in the long term.
My son -who i have to say was heavily subsidised by his parents went to Heriot Watt and he is still paying back a student loan 5yrs on BUT he has an IT job which pays him handsomely but my daughter who didnt choose that route scrambles for work through agencies at minimum wage.
Again -the Scottish Assembly have chosen to invest in the future of the young people by 'subsidising' tuition fees by abolishing them. Its a gamble as most will bugger off.
To close -can people please see the difference between Westminster and the devolved Parliaments/Assemblies please. Its MSP's who decide on the budget in Scotland NOT MPs !!!
Blame the government redhelen, dont take it out on molly and the students then.
that student being molly
