My son wants his hair highlighted just on the tips, but I'd like to do it at home rather than pay a small forture for it at the hairdressers.  Does anyone know how to do it and whether the affect can actually be achieved using a home kit?  Thanks

I did my brother's hair a few years ago, it was surprisingly easy. To get a good effect you need to get a proper bleaching dye - usually with peroxide. I'm afraid I can't remember the exact brand name we used but we bought it from boots and it came in a tube type package I think. I think the gunk was blue.

It included a hilarious plastic seethrough bonnet thing with holes punched all over. and a hook thing to pull bits of hair through. so you can get the highlights as close or sparse as you want. Then you just put on the gloves and spread the gunk on the tufts. best to do a test first to see how long you need to leave it on for to get the desired effect. My bro's hair is v dark brown so we just left it on for the max recommended time.

I'd never done this before but it came out really well (phew!)

I do my boyfriends every few weeks and we use jerome russell blonding kit for men. Dead easy instructions to follow and it comes with a cap if you want to use one. I usually just put it on with my hands but unless you know what your doing i wouldn't suggest it as it can grow out patchy unless applied evenly. It comes with a hook and gloves etc and its really easy to use once you get the hang of it. good luck

I used to highlight my hair myself and used Clairol's Born Blonde highlight kit, which came with the cap and hook etc. It was really easy to do  and I have long hair so if you are only doing the tips of (presumably) short hair you will have no problem.  It is trial and error in the beginning in that the first time you do it you may leave the bleach on too long or not long enough so remember to make a note of the exact amount of time you left the solution on. Don't overdo it the first time either.  If you're using a cap, only pull hair through on, say, every four holes so you get a subtle effect.  If your son wants more colour or a more dramatic look, you can then go back over and put some more streaks in.  Your son might want to use a bit of condition on his hair once it's coloured as bleach is very drying on the hair.

Or you could get your son to earn the money himself, as believe me, there's nothing worse than going to school with a less than professionally done hair do, particularly in today's ultra fashion concious environment. I'm not mentally scarred or owt, but it was 20 years ago and can still hear the laughing.....ahem, time to go.
