You should make a formal complaint. There are two reasons:

1) You shouldn't have found a spider in your food.

2) Possibly other cans may be similarly affected and need to be recalled.

As for how it happened, I suspect that it was simply an accident; not nice, but an accident none the less.

I would scream and never open a tin of sweetcorn again.
Contact the store and/or manufacturer ASAP.
They need to know that somethings gone wrong or they can't try to put it right.
Surely an apology, a refund and some assurance that they are going to investigate is enough.
After all you haven't actually suffered any harm have you?
This happened to me- I found a small spider in a tin of Macaroni Cheese (Safeways own) I guess no matter how vigilant they are, they can't stop a tiny insect crawling into a big pot of whatever they are making. I complained and got some vouchers but i certainly didn't buy that brand of mac cheese again. i think I went for Heinz in future, hoping it was a better product!!!

I think there is a Health and Safety Officer you might be able to speak to in the Local Authority.

Contact your environmental health officer at your local council offices - they deal with this sort of thing all the time.
Yes, sorry - I meant to say environmental health officer, not health and safety.
Dont worry,Your swallow more spiders in your sleep than you can count.I think the number per year is above a hundred.Sweet dreams!!
I'm afraid that the swallowing spiders in your sleep thing is an urban myth.
I heard the spider eating in your sleep thing, and although I think it's rubbish I've never heard it being in the hundreds.  I think it was about 8.
Is finding a spider in canned food all that bad or surprising for that matter?  The only thing that is surprising to me is that you saw it and did not eat it.  In this modern world where we trust large factories to prepare our food for us, I'm sure we have all eaten our fair share of insects and spiders and other things (much worse than insects) without knowing it.  Eating a spider will probably not hurt you.  If you truly think that it is "unbelievable" that they can "let this happen", then you have much more confidence in large factories than I do.  The only way to be completely sure about what you are eating is to grow all your own vegetables, raise your own farm animals, and prepare your own food, and even then I'm sure you will accidentally eat a few spiders.
Why would an apology and exchange not be sufficient?? perhaps the company should award you 1000 for your traumatic experience? Would this be more sufficient? Whilst you are at it why don't you claim for wrist pain accumulated from writing the letter of complaint?
thats nothing my mate bought a ready cooked chicken from safeways cut it open and found a little ball she took it out cut it open and aload of gunge and seeds fell out itwas what the chicken had been eating she took it back they sent it off to alab and she was compensated for it.(and not with another chicken)
