I am not suggesting that all 'non-smacked' kids become junkies, drunkards etc but just using the 2 'cases' as examples.
As it happens, neither of my lads smack their children but are very strict and won't put up with bad behaviour.
My lads regularly talk about their upbringing and have no complaints - not even about Sylvias unerring knack of being able to throw a slipper so that it curved around doors - about the way we disciplined them.

I've been reading this with interest......but you have all ignored the 'beaver'....
it is clear by reading through previous posts that there seems to be far more to this matter than the simple fact that star57's niece is going through the terrible two's.
star - You need to tell your niece 'firmly' that you will not put up with being smacked, and then, if needs be, *you* need to be the one to leave the room.

maybe the answer is not either smacking or reasoning but just setting limits beyond which the child is not allowed to go and sticking to those limits and then making sure the child knows when they have been crossed. i'm not in favour of beating any child but you do have to make sure they know and understand what the boundaries are and that some form or punishment or withdrawal of favours will result if bad behaviour continues.
|Star, you need to firmly say no and either sit the child away from you or move away yourself.
as for the weekly smacking debate, the conclusion i have come to is that discipline is what makes the difference. Some parents dont smack but couldnt care less what their child is up to and at the other extreme some will smack the hell out of a child for no reason and again not care what they are doing. Thus leaves children growing up with no sense of what is right or wrong.

jno jnr was never smacked and has grown up just fine. The idea that violence is a good idea, especially towards a toddler, is abhorrent to both his parents.
star57, it isn't really your job to bring up your niece, but you are entitled to tell her you personally don't wish to be hit, and impose whatever sanction you please - which may involve you refusing to talk to her, or leaving the room.
