They will ask you a few details and then a nurse will call you back (you can leave a mobile number). They will probably advise you to go to your GP though. You can definitely INSIST upon seeing a female doc/nurse. And try not to worry - they will almost certainly be really nice about it - they're used to dealing with it all the time. I know it's easy to say "don't be embarassed", but you just have to try to grin and bear it.
(If it makes you feel better, I worked last night at a place where they lock your bag away til the end of the shift. I then had to ask the supervisor [in front of everyone] to let me into my bag. She said "no". I said, "really - I need to get in there". "Why?" she responded. "Tampons" I said quite loudly. She was more embarrased than me!) My point is - every girl has to deal with them, so it doesn't make you wierd. And most girls have to worry about missing periods at least once in their lives - so that's nothing wierd either.
