there's a restaurant in the South Lakes out in the sticks between Kendal and Windermere - they do some B and B too. The house is an old Elizabethan house built just after the Armada. The bigger houses were made with beams from the ships and some of the planking went for panelling etc.
The design was classic "Lakes" with a main room and then smaller "service" rooms coming off it. In this house, the restaurant was in the main room, and which was probably the most intact part of the old house, along with its upstairs and staircase. Two smaller rooms came off a small corridor behind the restaurant, where the staircase was, one a bar and guest lounge, the other a lounge for the owners.
Various folk, family, friends and guests had reported seeing a "form" of a 13 yr old girl coming down the staircase and disappearing into the panelling outside their own lounge. This was several times over, probably, twenty years.
Anyway, the owners were sitting in the lounge one night with mutual family friends. The words "Help me" appeared in the ceiling in a brick red; put it this way, they wouldn't wash out and the ceiling had to be re-painted, the script in an old text of the Jacobean era.
They also had a rep of the Bish of Carlisle over pretty damned quick to excorcise it!
