The middle of my tongue stings as if I've chilli. Nothing can be seen on the tongue but it is tender. I have been putting Anbesol and bonjela on which sting when applied and give some relief but doesn't cure the problem. Can anyone suggest what could be causing it?

Many reasons.....but the commonest is dietary....hot foods. Nothing to worry about.
I've had this when it feels like your tongue is on fire but it usually stops after a couple of days.
If it gets worse or you have it longer than a week it might be worth calling the NHS helpline.
human bodys are wierd as hell!

last time i had a cold or virus or whatever - i experienced numbness on my top lip, tounge twitching right in the middle which was well annoying!

sometimes things just happen for seemingly no reason - wouldnt worry about it it might wind you up but it will go away on its on eventually :)

Thank you all. I have been unwell for the last 6 weeks and have been on a number of antibiotics and prednisilone. Hot ie spicy foods don't normally bother me but I will take your advice and give it time Thank you again
Just looked up the side affects of Prednisilone and one of them was Oral Thrush in which case it advices you to see your doctor who may prescribe lozenges.
Perhaps you should phone the NHS helpline to get some advice, and tell them which medication you are on?
Could you have simply burned your tongue Granny? I think most of us do from time to time on hot food or hot liquid and that can be sore and painful. That only lasts for a day or so though so if your pain has lasted longer it might be something else.

Hope you get better soon.

thank you missprim & Andyvon Don't think that I have burned my tongue but the prednisilone side effect seems likely. Thank you again.
