clicking knee

my knee keeps clicking when I bend it. It sounds more like bones crushing or something like that and it hurts. Does anyone know what it could be?

Mine have done this since I was a child whenever I crouched down and I don't suffer any ill effects from it.
Although I can feel when it needs to be clicked. It's as if it stiffens and then I need to bend it so it clicks and there's a release and my knee feels normal again.
If it doesn't cause any pain I don't think there's anything to worry about. - I don't
