Are people always overly polite with my looks?

Let me start by stating that I DO NOT hate myself, but growing up my mother occasionally said I was ugly, and the rest of my house was filled with older, narcissistic men. Personally I feel that I'm average, and the only reason I always got the girls was because of my personality (which again isn't award-winning).

I constantly get women telling me I'm good looking. They range from 18 to 55yrs old and vary in ethnicity. These are strangers and new acquaintances.

My question is this:
Is it just polite to compliment a persons look in public, or do I have something?

PS: I have a keen eye for looks (for my job) and I'm not impressed by the mirror.

PPS: I'm happily married and generally a secure person. This is not a vain attempt at getting rated. I simply want to know if this is "one of those things" people do that I seem to have missed.

Just curious as to why complete strangers would tell you that you are good looking. How does that happen? " That'll be £4.50 sir. By the way, I think you're very good looking" ???
Two question and both the same. Why aren't you all suspicious of this?
People have always complimented me for my eyes, otherwise probably very rarely indeed. You clearly have some sort of charisma and that is a very good indication whatever your mother said.
