How many PE lessons do your children have at secondary school?

My son originally had 1 PE lesson a week, last term he came in and said an english lesson is being replaced by another PE lesson (2 PE lessons a week). This term he has had a maths lesson replaced by yet another PE lesson, so now he has 3 PE lessons a week.
I am going to phone the school to complain as he only has 2 years left until he sits his GCSE'S and maths is not his strong point so needs his maths lessons.
I believe its so they don't have to teach them, they just palm aload of children off to do PE, teachers are always leaving and he has supply teachers on a regular basis.

I can't believe they are taking vital lessons away from the children at such a crucial time before the GCSE'S.

I agree, and i would complain, my kids have 3 PE lessons a week, and i would rather they learnt something more than just keeping fit (which they do at home running about in the garden with us, playing football etc) anyway when i complained, headteacher said as i was the only one complaining they will stay in place, other parents would rather have less home work to worry about.

It's government guidelines I think to have at least 2 lessons of PE, because of unfit children. You can also take a GCSE in PE now too.

thanks rozia, its just a worry that they take maths and english away and replace them with PE, PE wont get him a job when he leaves school, but maths and english will hopefully.

One a week but my son goes to the gym 5 nights a week for an hour each time.

Hi craft1948, yes it covers football and rugby at the moment, the Monday lesson was theory but next week it changes

In ancient times when I was at school we had a 6 day time-table. During winter we had 2 periods of hockey, 2 periods of netball and 1 of gym. Then in summer we had 2 of tennis, 2 of cricket or rounders, and 1 of gym, so I don't think your son's games curriculum particularly heavy with sport.

My son has two x 1 hour pe lessons a week (out of 25 lessons).

My son has 2 PE lessons a week, one is football/rugby etc, the other if gymnastics at the moment but it changes with the seasons, he's in year 8. I didn't think they did theory in PE unless they took it as a GCSE option, I think I would complain.

I know what you mean Craft1948, but i don't think they should be removing a english and a maths lessons and replacing it with PE.
Alot of children don't excericse enough especially with all the computer games available these days.

The school changed into an Academy a couple of years ago and it has gone down hill fast, the Ofsted report was terrible. Teachers are always leaving, when he does get homework the teachers never collect it in, let alone mark it.

They have the school on 2 sites (different towns) and ferry the children by minibus between the schools, my son also looses alot of lessons time on Friday due to having to wait for the minibus to be taken to the other school.

Ah, the perils of academies. Have you emailed Mr Gove?
Schools are required to provide 2 hours of PE a week as well as offering extra curricular physical activity opportunities. If you know they are doing more than the required 2 hours you should contact the Headteacher and then the Governors if you don't get any joy. Personally I would have done PE all day, loved it and still do!
