Losing weight
22 Answers
Hi everyone!!
Well I am now 26 and since I was about 18 I have steadily been putting weight on. On and off I've tried to lose weight but nothing seems to work.
A month ago we got a dog which now means having to go out at least twice a day to walk her. Each walk is at least 45 minutes.ive just had a week off and went on a number of long walks. The walking is obviously helping as I feel better when doing hills and long walks.
With regards to my eating habits, for the last 3 months I have been using a calorie counter and recording my weight each week. I have been making a conscious effort to eat healthier foods and I don't really eat takeaways maybe one KFC a month.
I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid last year and are on tablets for that.
So...I am not losing any weight. I have stayed between 13 stone 7 - 13 stone 13 for the last 3 months. I thought doing a bit of exercise would at least help but it isn't.
Just getting fed up now. What am I doing wrong? I would like to lose a pound a week - I don't want a sudden weight loss.
Thanks for any help guys

I would keep a food dairy for a week and look very carefully at how much you are eating
Sometimes when we want to lose weight we cur down too much and end up putting out bodies into famine mode so weight loss either stops all together or, even worse, you slowly begin to put some on or fluctuate
If I were you, I would look for some menus on line that give you the calorie count that you are after. I think we are surprised by how much we can still eat and still lose weight.
There are 100's of recipes out there to choose from, but please, dont start anything 'faddy'

The link there gives you a whole host of breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes
Remember, fruit is essential as well as veggies for your well ebing

Thank you so much for the advice. I was just talking to my partner about looking at joining an online slimming club. He is perfect weight for his height and can eat anything he likes - which can make it difficult!
We are getting married next September and I just want to lose weight slowly rather than a big chunk coming off. I will definately look into slimming world.
Thank you x

Exercise is great for health, I ought to do more of it, and will help, but you have to do a fair chunk of it to burn off a reasonable amount of calories, so you are right to look at the amount you are taking in too.
Calorie counting is fine. IMO unless you do then you lose track of what you have had, but it needs to be conscientious, nothing accidentally forgotten. And of course you need to now what a sensible daily limit is for you. A group will help with that. And once you have developed good eating habits and reached your goal it should become more natural to know what to have without needed to monitor.
As for getting stuck, well it does happen. It has taken me ages to lose even a little this year, but I'm hoping it will eventually pick up again if I stick with it.

SW worked for me - I lost 17 kilos from Jan - June, and one year later have kept it off.
The weekly weigh-in kept me going, although no-one else knows whether you have lost or gained.
Have you joined the 'Onwards and downwards' thread in Body and Soul - some great people there trying to do what you're doing.
Good luck, and have a wonderful wedding day.

I'm trying to keep a food diary at present, and trying to write down everything I eat, and am going to join Slimming World next week - I looked at their 7 day menus and it actually seems a lot more than I would normally eat! but it's the right stuff instead of fattening foods. Good luck with the diet - and how nice that you have a dog to make you exercise (although my dog took one look at the weather yesterday and suggested a day off!)
Calorie counting, increasing exercise ... as you've found, none of this helps. I was like you, tried every diet going and lost nothing. Then my sister told me about the diet her doctor had advised (she had just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was 100lbs overweight). He recommended a low-carb/high fat diet for her and it was working so I tried it too. I lost 50lbs and have manage to keep it off - without counting calories or trying to run marathons. All you've got to do is avoid the carbohydrates that make most of us fat - sugar, bread, rice, pasta etc. Eat lost of green veggies and as much protein as you want together with healthy fats (like olive oil and butter). It works for me (and lots of others like Dawn French) and is easy to maintain. For the science (and more advice) have a look at http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf Hope this help - good luck!
if you drink half a pint of water about half an hour before meals it helps the digestive system to prepare for foods, that way it is like having a bowl of soup but with zero calories. Chewing your food slowly and thoroughly e.g. after every mouthful you put into your mouth put down your knife and fork or sandwich until you have chewed the rest, this way you will feel fuller more quickly.
It all comes down to self control. I know if I kept biscuits in the house I would eat all of them and this applies to cakes and chocolate too. I have no self control where they are concerned, so I just don't buy them. I am still too fat so am starting in a Weightwatchers class next Monday followed by Zumba, which I believe are easy exercises. Have you seen the programme about secret eaters who think they are doing well but all the time are popping little extra bits into their mouths as they are cooking or preparing meals. Perhaps that is what you are doing and not even realising it. I watched my daughter preparing our meal the other day, she also needs to slim, and she was constantly tasting the ingredients. She must have eaten quite a bit like that, and then the meal as well. It is very difficult to stop snacking but it is the only way. One of the problems is that while trying to slim all you can think of is food and find you are desperately waiting for the next meal. Iron self control is the only way.
Thanks so very much to everyone's answers they have all been so helpful. Apologies for not commenting earlier but this is the first chance I've had to come on here.
I know people always say it but I don't really eat chocolate or crisps or biscuits - it really annoys my OH that I can make a
Chocolate bar last weeks. I just need to find what works for me. Calorie counting isnt working because it just keeps saying I don't eat enough so I figured I would give slimming world a try. I need to lose 3 stone in order to have a healthy bmi.
Thanks for the tips about the onwards and downwards feed. I will definately have a look.
Just on another note - is there an AB app?!
AB slimming club sounds brill!
