In my life I have had experience/knowledge of six people who have taken their own lives. The methods used were hanging, gas oven, pills, cut wrists.
Does anyone know what the most common method is of taking your own life?
Not that I am considering this. It's just that,as two deaths have been fairly recent, it has got me thinking of the different ways.

The methods are as various as the reasons, but an educated guess says haning followed by pills.
An important element of the mind-set of a suicidal person is the endless and complete sensation of a loss of control over anything, including the massive meotional pain which can no longer be tolerated.
The act of suicide is the one last act the individual can control, a way to hit back at the pain and end it oncce and for all, and that can feel like a very welcom release. Depending on the individual's need to simply slip into oblivion, or to hit back hard and finally, can determine the method used, which is why some people jump under trains or off high buildings - one final act, but the individual's own, and that, at the final lost hopeless stage, is all that matters, because it is all that is left.

When I went to live in Canada I quickly became friends with an English girl living there only because her OH wanted to. He was a mean so and so. We had such fun. She was as off the wall as me with a great sense of humour. Once ended up in court one day...minor motoring but chose court for the hell of it.
When I was leaving after our three year stint she told me those three years had been the best she`d had in Canada and she wouldn`t know what to do without me. Well, we all say nice things to departing friends don`t we?
We wrote to each other until I had a really strange postcard. Couldn`t make head not tail of it. Not down but high as a kite it seemed.
Well I`d give her a ring next week I thought. Too late. She killed herself with the car exhaust.
I`m more careful with my friends now. Next week won`t do.
