Very worried - a faint without explanation

Not seeking a diagnosis here, but some reassurance. Situation is as follows. Sis (aged 39, in rude good health, not overweight, doesn't drink to excess, doesn't smoke) went for a eye test 2 weeks ago. As Optician was explaining results her hearing went completely. then her eyesight went. Next thing was she got very hot, sweat dripping off her. the paramedics woke her up and she was blue'd and two'd to hospital. In hospital she had saline drip, blood tests and ecg. All came back as normal.

Discharged from hosptial. Since then, she has been confused, unable to concentrate, felt spaced out, has memory issues, very tired etc. Went to GPs, they couldn't see her. Mum arranged for her to see mum's GP and she said "not normal to be unconscious for that length of time". She has been told she cannot drive pending an appointment with a neurologist which under the NHS can take up to 8 months. Thankfully, bank of mum and dad are paying privately for her to see a neurologist next week.

Sqad - any ideas?! V v worried about my baby sis.

Sounds quite worrying for you all. Amazed her GP wouldn't see her, after she was no better after being discharged from hospital. Hope all goes well with the specialist next week BM x

A sort of epiletic seizure brought on by the eye test or bad migraine attack.

Did she by any chance fall and hit her head when she fainted? Those are all signs of concussion or post-concussion syndrome.

Much as I could happily murder my brother I would hate for him to be seriously ill. I can understand your anguish and concern for your sister.

After paragraph one I was all ready to diagnose some blood sugar type problem. If mines gets too low I have an attack like that - apart from the being unconscious bit.

Sounds similar to what happened to me just over a year ago. I remember feeling strange and 'out of it' said I was going to bed. Woke up and it was the next day and I was in the stroke unit at Addenbrookes . First they thought it was a mini stroke then an epileptic fit. Had the CRT scan and it was neither just put down to am 'unexplained seizure' I was told not to drive for 6 months but given the ok again now. I was similar never been ill hardly seen a doctor in 25 years. Epilepsy nurse told me 1 person in 20 has a similar episode once in their life , but it is not classed as epliepsy unless there is a repeat. Some times a mini stroke can trigger an epileptic fit , that sounds like what happened to your sis.

That is like me saying to you, I have a legal problem, don,t want advice just reassurance.

This is an extremely odd story and no organic pathology comes to mind.

My first thought on reading your post was that of an acute anxiety state, but the ultimate opinion will be that of a Neurologist on the results of a brain scan.

I am not sure th at I have reassured you, but my hands were somewhat tied.

Are you asking me if your sister's symptoms could be due to a brain tumour?
If you are , then is answer is NO.........

Barmaid, can I just say don't worry - I have had 3 of the fainting fits you described - 1 in hospital whilst visiting, 1 in a restaurant loos and 1 at work - both time I had a headache and a pain in my neck felt very hot and sweat dripping down me!

All times I was out for approx 15 minutes - I was confused and forgetfull for 2 weeks afterwards it took me ages to get over it!

Doctors sent me for all sorts of test and eventually came up with something called insulin dumps - basically I have to eat a lot of protein and watch my sugar.

Thank you all for your kindness and support - I'm sorry I completely forgot to update this post (it's been a bit of an awful 10 days all told, with Sis BM being poorly, Great Uncle BM dying and Mr BM's aunt been diagnosed with terminal cancer).

Lil sis BM saw the neurologist. She had to have repeated tests because Chelsea and Westminster Hospital couldn't actually be bothered to release the original tests she had. He was of the view that it was "idiopathic" or more than likely anxiety related but there were no abnormalities. He has told her to try and slow down for a while but has not referred her for any further treatment. My mother has suggested that she is simply "highly strung"!

Sqad - you were completely on the money with my concerns (see that bedside manner is quite intuitive still!). All this happened at the same time as Great Uncle BM collapsed and it was initially thought it was a brain tumour or aneurism - thus I was feeling somewhat emotional and over sensitive. In the event Great Uncle BM had suffered a massive stroke from which he never woke up.

Thanks Mamy. I'm really sad because I cannot go to the funeral (I have a case which I simply can't move - thankfully the family understand, but I should be able to make it back for the wake). Then we are off to Scotland at the weekend for Mr BM to say his "goodbyes".

Then we are bloody well going on a long holiday.
