Atrial Fibrilation and warfarin/pradaxa anyone on pradaxa?

Hi I saw cardiologist this week who wants to put me on a blood thinner it is either warfarin or Pradaxa? I would much prefer the latter but cardiologist says it is up to my GP who will be prescribing it.I was wondering if there was a cost issue involved? Anyone on Pradaxa?

No idea about cost, but either are just as effective.

@ Gordie - I attach a link to a paper outlining the pros and cons of dabigatran vs warfarin gordie, for your info.

Cost may well play a part in any clinical decision, since warfarin is very very cheap, and dabigatran, being new is not, but it is not the only consideration.There are still some ongoing concerns about just how safe dabigatran is, just because it is new, whereas there is masses of information about warfarin and how it works and interacts with other medications etc.

Hi Gordie1. I was on warfarin about 12 years ago but after an emergency op. for something unconnected to my heart condition when the surgeons had a job to control the bleeding, I was put on something called Sotilol. (I think that's how it was spelt.
Some time later I was put onto soluble aspirin which I've been on ever since.
So there are all kinds of alternatives, obviously, but I've never heard of Pradaxa.
As I understand it, a number of factors are taken into consideration, such as age etc. to determine the best medication for you.
