I've ummmed and arhhhed about putting this on here, but here goes...
I was listening to the radio yesterday (Radio 4, approx 15.30 ish) and they were talking about when a girl starts her period.
There were parents (mainly Mums) on there saying how they'd thrown a party for them, or were planning to. One Mum even said she'd made a... er... cake, though I can't bring myself to tell you what the cake was called.
There were lots of parents on there saying how they'd invited their friends and family over, when it happened to their daughters.
Personally, I find this very, very, VERY weird.
Is it just me, or was I denied something?
It sounds very American to me as well, thank goodness my mother was never like that!
And then a bl***y cake to celebrate?! Thank goodness we don't do things like that in Great Britain!
I am so, so glad you've all said the same thing.
Despite being totally embarrassed by what I was hearing, I was honestly thinking that I'd maybe missed out, or that my family was a bit weird in not "celebrating" it.
Nice to know you all feel the same way as I do! :-)
I am grateful I'm not in the Nootka tribe from North America, if Markraes link is to be believed. They take the girl out to sea and she has to swim back to land, as a test of her new found strength. That would have seen me off I didn't learn to swim until I was 11.
Out of interest Bluestone what's the issue with men posting on this thread? We have daughters this applies to, and clearly have an opinion, so why cut out 50% of answerbank?
