Sqad...A Quickie.

My granddaughter was born with three kidneys....two had to be removed when she was a baby.
My daughter, not her mother, has been a bit unwell and tests today show she has three kidneys.. two normal size and one about half.
Is this very common and will the three kidneys be plumbed in and working? I'm just curious, though it may have been useful when OH was on the transplant list.....she'd have given him a discount, I'm sure, :-)

This is extremely unusual.

Granddaughter......3 kidneys....2 on one side and one on the other OR one on each side and one in the pelvis. How many ureters? Don't understand why 2 were removed unless they were diseased.
Only leaving her with one kidney was "pushing one's luck" and had to be a good reason.

Your daughter....3 kidneys...two normal and one "duff"...depends upon how many ureters......

Extremely unusual............the "plumbing" is crucial and needs to be investigate by intravenous pyelograms..........one ureter to each kidney or two kidneys having one ureter.

Thanks Sqad. I don't know much about the whereabouts of Gd's kidneys. One was fine but the other two diseased or not working. I will ask more now.
Daughter has one on the left and two on the right, one above the other I think. She has unexplained tummy pains which must be bad for her to complain and to tell Mum anything is wrong. Will grill her more as we only had a quick chat this evening.

Hi gness - it sounds as if you daughter has a duplex kidney on one side. About 2% of people have this on one or both sides.
As Sqad says sometimes the plumbing is abnormal leading to increased risk of infection, so it's good she is being investigated.
There is a strong genetic predisposition to duplex kidneys, so this might explain why your granddaughter was affected.

Have just thought...for you or Sqad.....daughter had an intussusception at 7 months...would three kidneys have been obvious then during the surgery?

Probably not; the surgeon would have been concentrating on relieving the bowel obstruction and would have had full view of the bowel, stomach and liver. The kidneys would have been deep behind these structures, and not easily visible from a frontal approach without unnecessary disturbance of vital structures.

Thanks Slaney. Just chatted with son...granddaughter had very complex kidney problems...she was very ill often and still has some problems at thirteen.
Daughter's tummy problems don't seem kidney related to me so it's just a co-incidence I suppose. May be that more of the family have three kidneys. Shame OH died having none.

Yes - it could be that other family members have duplex kidneys - mostly there is no difficulty; just a few like your granddaughter have more complex problems.
