I've had a cold for a few days, but woke up this morning with what seemed like earache. Then the most excruciating pain in my left ear, followed by bleeding whilst the pain continued. Managed to see doc straight away and he says it is perforated eardrum caused by blockage of cataarh. Given 500mg Amoxicillin 3 times daily. 1) Would it be wise to wash hair tomorrow as water will inevitably get in? 2) Can I have wine with dinner? Doesn't say not to drink on leaflet, but I can't afford to get nauseous as I cannot throw up. Forgot to ask doc at the time. Many thanks and Merry Christmas everyone.

I'm pretty sure you can drink whilst taking amoxycillin
1) Yes a moderate drink with your antibiotics is fine.
2) Yes , you can wash your hair and even if water did go in your ear....no big deal. You could put some cotton wool into the ear before washing.
3)This is a common situation with virus infections of the ears......bleeding and pain
4) The perforation will heal within about 10 days.

Ah, thank you so much. So I can make myself presentable AND have a glass of wine! Good news ...
It's probably a bit late in the day now, but you can buy dry shampoo if you are worried about getting water in your ear. I use it every now and then when I get up late
I'd also recommend half a pot of yoghurt with each dose of Amoxicillin to prevent the common side effect of mild diarrhea.

I hope you feel a bit better for tomorrow.

Thanks. I will wash it carefully with handheld shower head and pack with cotton wool first. And I'd forgotten about yoghurt, but will remember to have some daily. Enjoy your day xx
