went blue in the face, and stopped breathing. I checked Airways and breathing....he was not breathing, pulse was weak, i could barely feel it! Did i do right think commencing CPR, ambulance crew said i did really well, and i may have saved his life... but patients family say i over reacted! i feel terrible being treated like this. When he came round he did not know where he was, he was confused and very grey in the face. ECG was abnormal initially, but improved during the day. What happened to him. He says he has no heart conditions. He takes no drugs, nor drinks alcohol.

Im very deflated by the whole situation, first time i had to react in such a way. His family keep making me look stupid.

I think you reacted really well. Well done for keeping your head in a crisis, in -laws are probably piddled off ( or totally embarrased ) that you knew what to do and they didn't. And the ambulance crew said you did the right thing ( whilst they stood there and did nothing ) Sleep well tonight, loads of people have the training, but not everybody has the confidence to put it into practice when its needed. XX
Remember the Latin phrase 'Illegitimi non carborundum'.

It means:

Don't let the bastards grind you down
Wonder what they would have said if he had died because you did nothing. Take no notice phleb, you did the right thing and you were praised by the people who count. Well done.
Well done phleb, at least you knew what to do, I bet they didn't, they feel inadequate so are taking it out on you. Ignore them and be proud of yourself.
Every credit to you, had to do it once myself and never regretted it , nor must you.
As the medics say you did right, you dont need to beat yourself up over your reaction. Thank goodness there are those able to react quickly in an emergency. Me - am sqeamish and would probably faint as well.
People like you are a rarity - WELL DONE, YOU DID ABSOLUTELY THE RIGHT THING - stuff the dysfunctional in-laws.
\\ What happened to him.\\

Almost certainly a vasovagal attack.

You did really well phleb.

Me? I would run a mile in such a situation...(unless they were in BUPA);-)
Perhaps his family wanted him dead. I know that's not a nice thing to say but it happens a lot. Well done and if it happens again do the same, tell the inlaws you want him alive even if they don't!!
Only just seen this thread,
phleb you did exactly the right thing,
I've been a First-aider for 30+ years, the only wrong thing you can do
is to do nothing.
So well done you!
I agree with everyone else, you did do the right thing. Ignore the In-laws, the experts said you did well, so tell them that maybe it will shut them up.

Just updating you, im still being told i over reacted. One of them said i should not have commenced mouth to mouth, i should have just done compressions. I did just do compressions for a while, and no response and then i proceeded to mouth to mouth, i only did what i was taught!!. I do know that first aid practice has changed now, but i did what i was taught in my training a few years ago. The person telling me how it is just stood there watching, he did not attempt to do anything to help. He does'nt even know first aid, but he said he 'asked' someone, fancy gong to ask people how first aid works just to put me down. The person that collapsed was my bro in law, i had to save his life, however i did it.And what i did has saved his life. So why am i being picked on. I feel good about stuff, then a twit comes along and makes me feel down again.
