Badly Cut Knee

My eldest daughter has really hurt her knee (fell over yesterday and managed to cut a three year old scar off her knee). I covered it today but she has gone to bed with bare legs to try and dry it out. What should I do tomorrow for school - she wears a skirt and tights (it's cold here at the moment). Should I put a dressing on it (too big for even a ginormous plaster), I a worried that tights will stick to her leg. Thanks (sorry if the detail is a bit yucky).

Do you have a dressing and a bandage? Definately cover it for a few days to protect it. Get well soon eldest daughter's knee.

Got any mepore sher? If not, you should get some in for things like this - it's great stuff. In the event you haven't I'd go for a dry dressing, just so her tights don't stick.

I would put antiseptic cream on a gauze pad and a light bandage to keep it in place then tights as normal.

also keep a good eye on her and make sure its cleaned up very well. Friends daughter fell in the playground and split her knee open few years ago, ended up in hos few days later with septacemia.

. . and some of us would see the bloody stuff banned! Antiseptic creams inhibit the growth of new tissue. (That's why they're banned from first aid kits).

A melolin dressing would be best but, failing that, anything to simply keep the wound clean and prevent it adhering to your daughter's tights would do.

I agree with Karen and Chris, a moist wound elastoplast (a big one) is the ideal thing.

I really didn't know that Chris, do you mean Savlon and the like? I always use that and never had any problems.

Thanks all - she had a long soak in the bath last night and tonight she has gone to bed in her pj top and pants to try and get some air to it (no idea what I am talking about, seemed like a good idea though). Will put a dressing on it for school as its too cold for a skirt and socks. Will google mepore, thanks. Have told the teacher that her leg is really sore (right on her knee) and she is allowed to sit on a char and not the carpet at circle time. Apparently she was really brave, didn't even cry but needed some water as she nearly keeled over. She is a real little trooper (bless her). Thanks all (I am rubbish at medicines and really rubbish at gore of any kind (weak stomach) but obviously want to make sure I don't do the wrong thing).

Hi Sher - when it gets a little better - buy Germolene New Skin and that will keep it protected - it is a see through plaster but will keep germs from the wound.

You can buy Mepore dressing in Boots - I bought a huge box of them but you can buy them individually. I've found with a melolin dressing and surgical tape the tape has been known to really stick to my skin and has taken off the top layer of skin which is why I stick with the Mepore dressings

I can't help thinking that air is the best healer in this case so a breathable plaster would be enough.
I'm a first aider but I'm happy to stand corrected.

It really is good stuff nungate, isn't it? The hospital always used it on mr macs fistula when he was dialysing and he swears by it.

With the germolene plaster it "wears away" so it is not painful to remove - of course when it gets better.

I've always found it works really well, Karen had too many episodes of tearing skin off with the dressings OUCH!

Sher, I know a nurse who can't deal with vomit, blood or 'other' fluids. How she does her job I'll never know :) Mums are allowed to be squeamish.

That's mr mac's problem too nun - the skin on his arm is really thin and papery in places and an ordinary plaster would be way too sticky.
