Lump On Finger

For about the last six weeks, I have noticed a lump on my finger. It is on my forefinger on the first joint (ie the first joint above the finger nail). The lump is on the middle finger side (if this makes sense). It is a hard lump and not moveable. It is red. You can clearly see it but it doesn't hurt. Feels a lot bigger than it looks.

I've suffered with various aches and pain in this hand for years (mostly WRULD type things, but nothing in the fingers).

Any ideas what it is? because it doesn't hurt I wasn't inclined to do much about it.

Has it felt warm at any stage? Could be arthritis

Random question but do you hold a pen by there? I have one similar but on my third finger, same joint and assume that's what caused it. Been there for years but doesn't hurt or cause me any problems.

i don't recall it feeling warm. I do hold a pen by not very often. i tend to type.

It's a lump actually on the bone on the joint.

Just a little bit of bone spurring off the main bone, you can get them all over the place.

Sorry, Distal InterPhalangeal joints (DIP) - the joint at the top of your finger. Too much time at rhumo with them going on about my swollen fingers joints - DIPS, PIPs and MCPs...

Possibly a Herberdens node .They can be red .
They are sort of spurs on the finger joints where the bone calcifies .

Thank you Shaney. Any reason why THAT particular joint should have calcified and others haven't?

Could be a touch of arthritis BM....I've had it for a while now. The top knuckles of a couple of my fingers are affected. Doesn't really bother me much, apart from the fact I'm a bit clumsier than I used to be. Perhaps best to see the Doc.

Maybe it just gets used more than you think it does and that's why it gets calcified?
