A female family member was woken yesterday morning by stomach pains (epigastric area). These pains have been continual and have not abated. She rates the pain score as a 5-6. Bowels and stools are normal, as are BP & temp. She has no history of abdominal problems.
Any ideas?

How old is she?
When was her last period.
Has she taken anything for the pain..e.g gaviscon.?
Question Author
She is post menopausal, early 60's. She says it is not a heartburn type pain. She has tried Gaviscon yesterday and this morning a scrounged Lanzoprazole to no effect. Paracetamol is not touching the pain
Which bit of the epigastric area? Gallstones or an ulcer can be ridiculously painful.
Question Author
She says it is the whole of the epigastric area
Right........if it has occurred with that suddenness with nausea or vomiting, not relieved by antacids it is unlikely to be of gastric origin.....or for that matter an intra -abdominal problem.

I hesitate to suggest taking Ibuprofen on the basis that it may well be muscular as that would not be a popular advice from certain quarters.

In which case, nip her to A&E for a doctor to pop a hand on her and i would be interested in any feedback.
Question Author
She (sister on my sofa) has also informed me she feels constantly nauseous as well
Question Author
Thanks sqad.
I will give you feedback as and when xx
sorry....should have read..."without nausea or vomiting."
muscular ?
Remember Mr YS had something similar 15 years ago. It turned out to be acute pancreatitis. Sorted out rapidly with a brief hospital stay.

Hope everything is OK Mrs. O
My friend had pancreatisis, acutely painful. Hospital stay and meds sorted it out.

Thanks yoga.
She doesn't look at all well and won't eat. I am not convinced it is muscular.
There isn't a doctor at the local minor injuries unit until 4pm so I am going to try and persuade her to go there then
Question Author
I'm away to google pancreatis
id say if she looks unwell and not eating , best to see the doc. mrs o

Update:
She said she would ring her GP first thing this morning but when she got up the pain had vanished completely.
I think the medical term for the condition is "just one of those things"
Lol.......I agree
Acute wind retention ???
That's good Mrs. O. Glad it wasn't pancreatitis. Mr YS was told never ever to drink alcohol after having it, even though he didn't drink much before.
Apparently it can set off another attack.

He'll have a sip of wine but apart from that it's enforced teetotallism for him.
I still enjoy the odd glass though :-)
