In my house they are caused by one son punching the other son on the nose!

Sorry to have to correct you here Andy. I always think your answers are pretty spot on. It isn't the bridge of the nose that should be pinched but the nostrils thus sealing the nose. The person should be instructed to lean forward, preferably over a sink and to breath through the mouth.After the bleeding has stopped they should avoid blowing their nose or picking it for several hours.
