I've recently been prescribed two medicines. I'm only on the second day of taking them, but just wondering if they should be taking effect by now, or do I have to wait for them to 'get in my system'?

Movicol sachets twice a day (morning and evening)

Mebeverine 135mg three times a day.

I haven't noticed any change. Is this normal whilst only on day 2?

I think you can take up to EIGHT sachets in a day!! thing is, it may take a while but you don't want to be overwhelmed by the results! of course if you're impacted you might want to be overwhelmed, and quite soon.. have a read of the dosage, and nothing else. I believe it's pretty harmless stuff.

movivol.. it depends on how effective your insides are at moving it through your system! it may take 2-4 days, but it's not a whopping dose as you may have read on the leaflet.

not sure about the other item.
movicol, even!

I haven't actually read the leaflet. The "possible side effects" tend to freak me out a bit.
My insides are crap at moving things around. I can hear things making lots of weird noises, almost like a popping sound, but still nothing. I was drinking these PLUS fybogel last week, and still nothing! :-(

Ah, "impacted" was a word the doctor used, and said this should... er... sort that out. (Sorry, it's a bit gross isn't it) :(
I am just going by the sticker on the front of the box which says, underneath my name and address, to be taken twice a day.

Hmm, I may up that to 3 and see how I get on.

Thanks for the advice :-)
MadMen.....some advice...if you are going to up the dose stay home ...notwithstanding any comments of mine on other threads I mean this in a helpful spirit.

Woof, just because we don't agree on something on a different thread, doesn't mean we have to 'fall out'. I'm a lover not a fighter :)

Thank you for the advice. I last took one at 7 this morning, and was going to take another one just now, but I think I'll leave it until tonight (I have to go out in a bit) and do as you've suggested.
I'm home all day tomorrow, so will up the dosage then.

Thanks again :-)
Have you tried a coffee enema? They are supposed to be good for 'sorting out' ther innards
Movicol is excellent for getting you moving again, just up the dose until it moves, like Sara said, you can take eight a day or near that, just dont take any massive amounts in one go or you may get launched by the result.

Welshy, I did ask him about a colonic irrigation, and whether or not he thinks it would be helpful. He said "no. Lets wait and see what the blood test brings back first".

I have to say, the thought of having one fills me with dread, but I suppose it would be a good thing. Hate the thought of old rotting meat inside me.
Question Author
Ratter, I think upping the dose is the way forward. I will do so tomorrow morning.
Just wondering though, he was talking about Movicol as if it not only gets things moving, but will stop things 'not moving' in the future. Is this the case, or will I forever be downing disgusting glasses of 'lemon and lime' gelatine-like liquid?
The concept of old rotting meat inside you is a fallacy MM....
Movicol can be used on a permanent basis but mebeverine is often enough to keep things comfortable once the initial problem is sorted. IBS is also to an extent an illness of the emotions (personal experience) and hopefully once you have sorted out the other aspects of your life, then your digestion will settle down to a manageable level.
Mebeverine lessened my IBS symptoms within 3-4 days and then totally went away within a week. Symptoms were kept at bay for 3 weeks and crept back in, more Mebeverine, I was in that cycle for a while but it was lifestyle changes and mind over matter that cleared by IBS, however during periods of stress or poor diet I can feel the change in my body.
I am not familiar with Movicol??
Question Author
Woof, I did wonder if it could be related to the anxiety, as the spasms in my stomach do seem to get worse at night time, when I'm stressing out.
I've always been under the impression that things like red meat do not digest well and that it can stay inside you for years and years - putting you at risk from things like colon/bowel cancer?
I just feel so bloated and uncomfortable all the time.

Thanks for the help and advice. I have to go now, but will have some more sachets tomorrow.

Hey jd :)
Sorry, you weren't there when I started posting.
I have a fairly healthy diet, but certain things do seem to aggravate it, which I could do with completely cutting out.
As above, it does seem to get worse at night time, which is when my anxiety is at it's peak. I suppose I was a bit naive in thinking it would be 'gone' overnight.

I do have to go now. Got a Yoga class in twenty minutes (hoping it'll help calm me down a bit!) but thanks again for the help and advice.
Madmen.....
Movicol is to relieve your constipation.

Mebeverine is to relieve pains in your stomach.

a side effect of Mebeverine is CONSTIPATION.

Check with your GP, but i agree with woofgang.............once your constipation is sorted with your Movicol, then you can use Mebeverine for times of pain.

Question Author
What? What is the point of that then, I mean taking them both at the same time?
I have to take something for my stomach, it's driving me up the wall! It's not painful as such, more of a weird tightening feeling (he describes it as spasms).

I'm going to up my sachets tomorrow, and see if that has an effect.

Do you think something should have... er... 'moved' by now, 2 days into taking them?
\\\What? What is the point of that then, I mean taking them both at the same time?\\\\

Exactly....but do as your GP suggests.

Give the sachets 3 days to work.
