Severe Burning Throat Pain Acid Reflux
18 Answers
Hi there
I was lying in bed and I was sleeping and I woke up choking with all this acid coming up into my throat and chest I got up and took gaviscon, milk and omeprazole but my throat and chest feels it is on fire still and I am really worried I will have done some serious damage to it. I had a salmon fillet with lemon and pepper butter for tea I was trying to be healthy and look what happens the salmon has come back on me something awful. Is all that stomach acid coming up into your throat and chest dangerous for you.

It means you won't lie completely flat at night, so the acid won't be able to travel upwards and burn your throat. Acid is bad for your throat (I also have reflux). If you want to control it with your diet, read the book "Eat Right For Your Type".

I also have acid reflux, caused by a haitus hernia.
It may have been the pepper that started you off - my reflux is agitated by bacon and sausages, so I have to forgo the sausages, I will risk the bacon because it doesn't always kick off.
Try not to eat anything after at least two hours before you go to bed, and make sure you have at least two pillows -I think those wedge pillows look uncomfortable - two good firm pillows will do the job.
The digestive system is very good at healing the acid burns quickly and effectively, so don't worry too much about lasting damage.
I always have a glass of milk, which I sip slowly sitting upright - downstairs watching TV usually, and then pop a Gaviscon in when I head back to bed, but try and make sure it's all gone before you doze off. If you are a quick sleeper, try the liquid Gaviscon.

There are lists around of food groups and even specific food types to avoid if you have GERD / Acid reflux.
Fairly high on that list would be, I imagine, spices like pepper, things like lemon juice, drinks like orange juice, raw onions, high fat content foods....
There is a list here that has some suggestions which you may or may not find of use...

yes....get your doctor to up your dose of omeprazole to 40mg daily, or swap to lansoprazole if you haven't tried that. there are also other more heavy duty meds you can get for this condition, so try not to worry too much. but you do need to sort this out so that you do not damage your gi system further. good luck x
Are you by any chance on the waiting list for a Nissen Fundoplication?

By and large performed laparoscopically these days, takes 40-60 minutes depending on the skill and expertise of the surgeon.

I'm sure you'll be fine gordie. I used to suffer terribly with acid reflux too but after reading this post, I realise that since I've been eating my tea earlier that it has helped a lot.
I avoid pastry like the plague as that will always set it off and certain types of bread make it worse.
Hope you feel better soon and you take the good advice that's already been given.

I know exactly how it feels gordie, I to suffer from a hiatus hernia and get acid reflux. I have had to take two capsules each morning now for a while. It is horrible when you are just drifting off to sleep and it feels like you are choking. sometimes it makes me sick a little and the burning seems to go on forever. I cannot pin point what starts mine sometimes a glass of white wine will do it and not other times. It is relieving to know other people have the same thing. Brenda x
You have diagnosed a hiatus hernia and this is the first time that what is almost certainly. "acid reflux" has happened.........no big deal.
\\\Is all that stomach acid coming up into your throat and chest dangerous for you. \\
As a "one off"......no it is not dangerous and will do no permanent damage.
Gaviscon or Omeprazole should be kept by your bedside.....milk makes things worse.
I have never been convinced that diet and particularly spiced food has anything to do with acid reflux .....just a personal opinion.
