I'm planning on taking my hubby away for his 40th this year for a short break. His birthday is in August, and I've been advised that it will be very expensive that time of year (no matter where I go), because of school holidays.
I was initially going to take him to Paris for a one night stay, but then someone else suggested Rome for a few nights in September.
So my question is, where in Europe would guys like to go for a short break? Hubby is a MASSIVE footy fan. And before you all say it, we have been to Barcelona, twice. He has also been to Real Madrid and Milan.
German Bundesliga starts August 9th this year, Bayern Munich (champions league finalists) are in, well Munich, which is a beautiful city. Well worth the effort only a couple of hours on the plane, public transport much better than ours, plenty of beer and Schweinshaxe for dinner. Perfect!
"I don't know about football, TC, but Brussels is a lovely city. Go by Eurostar.
Some of the best seafood in Europe."
Or Bruge - Chocolate and Beer.
Or do a few places in Belgium on the trains and pop over to Iepers, you could stay here: http://www.mainstreet-hotel.be/ (where they have a free mini-bar filled with wonderful craft Belgium beers and wine). They also do the last post which is very moving.
TCoy28 - OH and I went for a weekend in Amsterdam -not advised! - Firstly there are the female cops who are beautiful -think long blond hair in a plait/false eyelashes/handcuffs -then there is the constant urge to gamble all your holiday money in the casinos -then 'window' shopping in the red light district -spent most of my time telling him to put his eyes back in their sockets - and finally the 'cafes' where he will undoubtedly want to sample the strongest mary-anna on the menu and you have to try and float him back to the hotel room -Amsterdam is best left for boys weekends away ;-) I'd go to paris -lots to do and see in a small area and nice romantic meal on a boat down the river seine -forget about the footie ;-)
I've done Amsterdam weekends, with mates and as part of a couple. Both are catered for: it's not just 'whores and weed'. Plenty of other stuff to do/enjoy. Will be nice in August... but busy.
Definitely Bruges. Lovely beer and chocolate. Very beautiful little city. I'm going there in a couple of weeks time. I love it there and go 2-3 times a year. If you want to go more into Europe, then how about Krakow or Prague?
Dublin not memorable, no soul except Grafton Street.
I agree with Brussels or Bruges as the food is good. Is he a motor sport fan, if so try Marinello Italy and visit the Ferrari museum, and you could get in Verona, Venice etc at the same time?
