I wash out the tins and peel off the labels and put them in the paper recycling box, but I don't open both ends. I also wash out the glass jars/bottles and plastic bottles. Like Sammy Snake says, washing out the containers is usually requested on the recycling box - it certainly is on mine.
No, it's not stupid to 'wash and squash' your recycling, however you choose to do it.
It's great that more and more people (and local authorities) are recycling their waste but most people forget that someone, somewhere, has to process it. My partner has worked collecting domestic waste from doorsteps and in recycling plants and it is extremely unpleasant to have to handle dirty, mouldy recycling because someone could not be bothered to rinse it out.
If you don't already, please do this. We just rinse out in the left-over washing-up water.
Cheers
Thought I was the only one with a silly habit!
I have to add sequences of numbers up, ie. if the video counter reads 1:23:56 I have to add the numbers up (17 by the way - 17 would then become 8). I do this with allsorts, clocks, car number plates, serial numbers, etc, etc.
With regard to washing items to go in the recycling bin, I wash out all empty food containers. It stops the dirty tins, packages, etc, attracting flies, etc.
I have to eat crisp or hot chips eg McD's or KFC in the order they are on the pile ie like pick up sticks. I can't pull one out from underneath. Also with the washing but particularly towels, I have to fold them as they are most easily available and not from underneath another. I also have a number thing where I tend to have to get fruit and vege in 5's preferable eg 5 apples, 5 tomatoes but if I need more or less it has to be an odd number. I also check the doors and windows are locked several times even though I know I've just checked but this is mostly when I'm going out or to bed. Oh yeah and when I'm eating crisps I can only eat one at a time and if they have ripples I have to eat them so that they always have a straight line so I don't like it too much when they break across the lines. I don't feel so weird now though!
I do that with drains too, although mine is slightly different. I can't walk over 3 drains coz its bad luck and if I do then I have to say 'bread and butter' 3 times or something bad will happen. If I walk over 2 drains then its good luck and if I walk over 1 then I have to make a wish (I've made my boyfriend do this too).
I am so glad other people do the volume thing too. Also if I look at the clock and it says 13 mins past I have to keep looking at it until it says 14 (13 is unlucky), but if someone asks me to choose a number and 13 is available I have to choose it. OMG I'm insane.
I check the door and window locks all the time too. This has only started since I moved into my own place with my boyfriend. Also if I'm in bed and I think the gas is on I have to come and check it. I have to eat crisps with my sandwiches and I have to put them in the sandwich (I even do this when I'm in public). And last but not least (probably not even last actually) when I say 'Touch wood' I have to actually find some wood to touch!! Am I officially nuts? I'm off to the mental hospital now to turn myself in.
