Am off to the states soon with my daughter to visit her Dad. I am not a good long haul flight flyer. Any tips to take my mind off this or shall I just resort to drugs ?
Good book, lots of crosswords, iPod. I hate flying with a passion but just can't take drugs, I'm so scared that I'll need to get out in an emergency that I'll be too zonked to do it ;)
Agree with voddie about long haul though, much calmer and usually lots of good films. I'd prefer 7 hours to NY than 50 mins with Ryanair to Dublin, especially out of London City airport.
Sammy - I hate flying. On long haul I would take something to make me sleep.
I once flew to the Isle of Mann on a paper aeroplane. I have never been so scared in my life. I kept looking at a small kid opposite and wondering why he wasn't crying.
We are flying business class courtesy of my ex, but just the thought of being confined in this tin can just freaks me out. This anxiety has increased as I have got older, menopause etc. Rocky I take your point about Ryanair from City Airport flew with them in a propellor jobby a while ago, I absolutely nearly crapped my pants.
Often people think they`re scared of flying but it`s claustrophobia. There are fear of flying courses you can do - the major airlines run them. It might be worth investing in attending one. Failing that, maybe a mild tranquiliser might help. I would never take a sleeping pill because if anything happens, you don`t want to be sparko.
I put Ryanair and City airpot in the same sentence when infact they don't fly from there. Our flight was a small BA plane, I too nearly crapped my pants, I cried on the plane, OH told me to pull myself together so I wanted to rip his balls off, nightmare! The airport was excellent though ;)
Ah ! I was going to say it's not the flying, it;s the crashing into a mountain (in which case get a back seat for planes rarely go into reverse).
Oh confined spaces, claustrophobia eh ? Would a set of headphones, a relaxing set of tapes, and a sleeping mask make things better or worse ? The idea is to find something so interesting that it takes your mind of your conditions.
I'm with RR...I don't suffer from claustrophobia, but I suffer from worrying that the thing is going to fall from the freaking sky at every turbulent bump! (Please don't ask me why I am applying for cabin crew! lol)
Lol. Rocky, my daughter has laughed at this thread and reminded me it wasn't Ryanair but when we went to Jersey, can't remember the airline, something like island tours or flybe, I was terrified, I was supposed to be the confidant parent with three kids, instead my two sons had to unclasp my fingers from the armrest when we arrived. Lol
The only problem with taking a sleeping pill and flying to America, in my experience, is you will feel like utter Sugar for the first few days on arrival.
Couple of G&T's will help you to relax.
