Lovely and straightforward puzzle. Glad that the highlighting is optional, although I'm sure that JEG will be generous on the interpretation of the shade. Thanks Augeas for bringing back some happy memories.

Knowing nothing of the topic except what the Wiki tells me, I too can't say for sure what the 6 characters should be, but since I don't submit the puzzle I'm not going to worry too much about it.
Out next week, so see you all for 4250.

Puzzlement briefly over several of the answers, but that only added to the fun. Whatever the achievement actually was, and precisely where and when, it seems the official or accepted version at the time could have been expressed in six characters, so I'm not going to argue with that. Before my time, but nice to think of a simpler bygone age.
Started late, still finished Friday. One of my most favourite things in the world ever, though not the one featured, but the one named for the creator - she's still alive! I think there are at least four ways of entering 6 characters.
Incidentally, the colour does have a specific munsell value, and in my opinion, nothing else will do!

As others have noted, a largely straightforward but enjoyable puzzle.
I hope nobody falls down on the achievement. Wikipedia is ambiguous (even contradictory) in this respect and there are certainly two sets of characters that could be used, though I imagine what's wanted is the historically appropriate ones. I think the puzzle would have been better without this bit, since there's plenty of thematic material in the grid. Failure to get it right would not indicate failure to understand an aspect of the puzzle, but merely failure to locate unambiguously the particular characters that the setter has in mind.
As for the highlighting, I shan't bother because I can see two entries that are relevant in different ways.

To add further coal into the boiler, perhaps a six-letter word (reasonably well defined by the title) could also be used as the "achievement" - although I will submit alphanumeric combo. Shame about this ambiguity but surely the editors will allow one of several alternatives (ancient or modern, with varying degrees of accuracy)...? Won't they?
