Kissing On The Cheek

When you say goodbye to someone other than your partner and they offer you a handshake and lean forward for a kiss on the cheek, are you supposed to actually kiss that cheek or just brush it with yours? And in what situations should you kiss both their cheeks?

Brush. Both cheeks seems to be in vogue these days, I tend to be guided by the other person. However I don't often get the handshake option, not from friends!

vernonk I don't think you're supposed to 'kiss' the cheek just brush their cheek with yours and kind of air kiss. It makes me cringe .

If I know them well I will kiss them. I don't do air kisses...pretty pointless.

I thought you were meant to kiss the cheek. I do. Whether to go for the second one is confusing and can lead to awkwardness, unless you know if the other person always does a second one, or not.
I can't bear the whole business.

I have french relatives and they do 2 or sometimes 3 kisses on cheeks but lips never come into contact with cheek, however, on reflection, I can remember having an aunt that kissed on the cheek cos she wore bright red lipstick, you could always see where she's been lol!

Continental countries...both cheeks EXCEPT Holland and they do 3 kisses, 2 on one cheek and one on the other.

Coming from where I do, we do it all the time. Its just a brush on each cheek although some of the older folk seem to leave a bit of slobber on the cheek! lol
