Piles....

My friend is suffering terribly from piles. Really awful pain. He needs to go to the doc but is trying to deal with the symptoms by avoiding caffeine. Are there any over the counter remedies which have helped you?

well, there's pile ointment from the chemist - but if it's a chronic condition, he really needs to see the GP. He shouldn't be embarrassed, the GPs see this sort of thing all the time.

The chemist can provide a tube of something to help.

Not helped me personally, but Anusol H.C suppositories.

there is a injection the doctor can give. It depends how severe they are.
Eat plenty of fibre and drink loads of water. You can get stronger ointment
and pressaries from your Gp on prescription.Over the counter ones are preparation H and anusol!

If he is in bad pain, he may need a visit to the Outpatients for some treatment - they can attach tiny elastic bands which strangle the haeomerroids and they drop off after a few days.

I had this one once, the proctologist was a gorgeous young woman, and that was in scrubs, heaven knows how divine she would have been outside work!

However, we met under less that fortunate circumstances, but i did make her smile - when she asked me to lift up my gown, roll on my side, draw my knees up and relax, I advised her I don't normally do that without dinner and a movie first!

Until your friend gets an appointment taking lactulose will help soften the stools so its not so painful going to the toilet.

I'm sure I read somewhere about a new laser treatment.

Seems to me that if he can get his GP to take the condition seriously enough to actually offer to do something about it, then he ought to jump at the chance. Usually they are content just telling you that you have piles, something you already knew, strangely enough.

Has h actually been looked at and had piles properly diagnosed?

Some years ago I suffered badly from piles,I used to cry with the pain.I finally went to my GP who sent me immediately to hospital where I was kept in and had them surgically removed under a general anesthetic. I was only in for two days and the relief from pain was wonderful!! As I said that was some years ago and I have had no problems since.

Keep them cool, which should ease the discomfort a bit. A piece of cotton wool soaked in witch hazel can be a great help too. (I had a parent who suffered with this and witch hazel helped a lot)
