Were the terms and conditions of the booking not made clear at the time the deposit was paid ??
Sorry, but I don't think I'd want to pay BEFORE I ate. Ring them back and ask "why?"
Yes I'd say so...they could go belly up before then...happened to me three years ago...they took money shut down restaurant and scattered, we turned up to find locked , empty premises....and it may be awful , not up to scratch, don't pay balance till fed and happy.
The restaurant will no doubt be fully booked with large parties and it's probable that every booking has been phoned for the balance to be paid. However, I wouldn't pay beforehand in any restaurant.

thank you, we are not paying in advance, there was no terms and conditions as we looked after that phone call, also the phone call was on my hubby's mobile phone and came up Private number and you are right, they could go bust before we go
We have always had to pay before our christmas day dinners, but they are usually with a chain of pub/restaurants, eg Harvester etc.
