shaving powder

I stopped using shaving powder years ago because someone told me that it contains substances that are not good for the skin since the powder 'burns' off hair from the skin. Is this true? I presently use Lynx shaving blade, but it gives me bumps. I don't mind switching over to the powder, if and only if, it is safe.
