Morning....silence is not golden....I have gone very, very deaf.
Started with whooshing noises in my ears which changed in volume depending on how I moved my head.

On Saturday my hearing suddenly became poor while I was driving....so much I thought my engine had cut out.

I saw a pharmacist who sold me some drops which were to do all sorts of crackling explosive things in my ears......nothing at all. I did ask about a decongestant but he said not to use that.

This morning the hissing is worse and I am even more deaf.

I have an appointment with the nurse on Friday....is there anything I can do or buy myself before then?

p.s. It has made me reluctant to speak....can't really hear my voice properly and think I'm shouting so I suppose every cloud.....☺

You need to see someone who can look into your ears and either exclude or confirm a mechanical cause...i.e wax or fluid.
This is the most likely cause and is no big deal.

HOWEVER..if this is an inner ear problem, then it may well be a " big deal".

Contact your GP or of that is not an option go to A&E and explain your onset of sudden deafness and tinnitus

I'm no medical expert, but I'm thinking blocked sinus' ?

Your gp is the one to see. He can take a look and give a better opinion.

I am sure it's not wax....fluid after the chest infection I would believe.

I'll battle the receptionist and try my GP if there is nothing I can do myself then.

Hi, Slaney.....thank you....I have an appointment with the neurologist on 26th March.
That was the earliest I could get and by going further afield!

I've had no more episodes and as an aside thanks to you and Sqad...my walking problem from the still officially undiagnosed IC is improving fantastically......I'm guessing from opening up the smaller arteries through exercise......x

seriously tho i know how you feel gness had the same sort of thing last year mine was excess wax once it was syringed it was so much better, apart from being able to hear o/h nagging more clearly!

I remember the feeling of utter elation when I had my ears syringed and realised I wasnt going deaf!! Build up of wax was my diagnosis but I was really scared to go to the doctor at first, incase he said it was un-treatable, needed a hearing aid etc.... To be fair I should have gone a lot earlier but I put it off despite my hearing getting worse, hoping it would just "pop" one day by itself.

Hi Jd.....not as lucky as you I'm afraid.

Seems I have glue ear and if it doesn't clear in a few months I will have to have grommets.

I thought this was a childhood thing but it seems not and is probably a result of the chest infection I had at Christmas.

The GP offered me steroidal nasal spray with, she says, little evidence that it works but I am going to give it a try because I seem to be getting deafer by the hour.

Telephone voices are now just a gurgle and my own voice seems so loud yet I am asked to repeat myself so I guess I am whispering....

Being deaf is very different to imagining what it's like to be deaf....wish I had appreciated that when I was working with the deaf children...
