I have recently bought a new laptop with Windows 8

Whilst I am able to receive emails etc I am unable to click on any links

any ideas please ?

At least tell us what laptop you have and the e/mail account which you are using. Perhaps then I or someone more knowledgeable will offer an explanation.

Your laptop doesn't know which program to open to display web pages. So you need to associate html files (from a web link) with a particular program. See here:
