When I went to the hospital today to see ny dad, Ias told that a DNR form had been applied to my dad's notes. I understand what a DNR form is but am unclear as to whether it can be a doctor's decision to set this up.

Can someone clarify this for me please?

I'm not sure Till but I understood from dealing with my Mum that it had to have the 'blessing' of a family member/n.o.k.
I was asked if I wanted dnr for Fil ..which I refused....I'd be hopping if I thought someone had made such a decision off their own back..speak to doctor in charge of him verrry soon !
Tilly...we have one for my Mum but I had to discuss it with her doctor before my brother and I signed it.....and before the doctor could sign.
This document starts out by explaining to health staff how decisions should be made but if you scroll down to the bottom you'll find a copy of the information leaflet for patients (which is probably simpler to understand):

I did ask if I needed to sign something but was told that I didn't. I will speak to the doctor about it. I am under the impression from the ward sister that it was decided upon in my dad's best interest.
I was under the impression that you had to have the consent of either the patient if they are mentally fit or the family. I would question this.

Thanks for the link, Chris. The leaflet has made it a bit clearer. I shall ask to see the form tomorrow and request a meeting with the relevant doctor.

Thank you all.

My dad is of sound mind. I am beginning to wonder if he has requsted this. I have a lot of questions to ask.
My mother towards her end, made her views very clear. The hospital (who were lovely) made sure that we knew the score. I think that the fact that you have been told is positive. In cases where its been done without the patient/family knowledge, they usually aren't told either. The DNR form has to be completed by a doctor. No one else has the authority.

Thank you, woof. That has clarified it somewhat. I think the doctor has made the decision because of my dad's underlying chest problems. I will ask about that.
To be clear Tilly, its not entirely up to the doctor to make the decision. What the doctor's responsibility is is to record the decision on the NHS paperwork. There should be a DNR policy which is available to all. Require to see it if you are worried.
Good document Chris

The decision is made with the patient and doctor Tilly and if the patient is of sound mind, from the document the n.o.k. is not involved in the decision but may be told if the patient consents...

Your first stop is your Dad.

OK Peter, I'll speak to Dad as well. Thank you.

....and thanks to woof for that suggestion to look at the policy.
Tilly, hugs xx
