Antibiotics And Rash

I'm 4 days into a 14 days course of Clarithromycin (500) and Metronidazole (400), also taking Omeprazole (20), I was a bit in the night and have woken up to big red blotches over my thighs and back, it looks like sunburn but it's not itching at the moment. It looks like how I reacted to penicillin a few years ago but without the burning.

Do you think I've developed an allergy to one of the above or just a mild reaction, the docs are not open today and I don't know whether to take the next lot of tablets.

It could be the Clarithromycin.............or it couldn't..........your guess is as good as mine.

If the skin rash is no big deal and just looks unsightly, not spreading to other parts of the body and you feel well in yourself.....then carry on, monitor the situation.
Is it raised?

Marty reacts to something I feed him but we haven't figured out what yet. Big red blotches, slightly raised, no other symptoms....and it doesn't coincide with him taking his medication.

So I won't go into anaphylactic shock and die if I take anymore?
Question Author
Sorry sqad, forgot to say thank you :)
If you die....let us know and I will adapt my advice accordingly.
Question Author
Yes Ummm, it is slightly raised, not had a food allergy before but you never know.
Question Author
Lol sqad, thanks.
i would phone the chemist x
Have you eaten any nuts recently?

(childish snigger)
Question Author
That's what I'm thinking of doing Mally, this is the second round of antibiotics in 8 weeks, can't be good for you, surely.
Question Author
Sniggers back ;)

I had half a Toblerone last night, would that count?
I don't know. I just know he comes out in a rash like you describe and then it goes again. Just a mild reaction to something. It rarely lasts more than a day. Looks much worse than it is.

This is not saying yours is the same so pay attention for any other symptoms.
I didn't get a rash, but a course of Clarithromycin was one of the nastiest antibiotics I've taken (see here http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Body-and-Soul/Question1338483.html ) - worked though, no return of infection.

Metronidazole is a big "no" for drinking alcohol - couldn't be an interaction with that could it?
"Sniggers back ;)

I had half a Toblerone last night"

I really hope that's not a mucky euphemism :)

[ sorry rocky, couldn't resist, get well soon - Dxx ]

Dave, no booze for me with Metronidazole, I got caught out many years ago a day after finishing the course.

No other side effects at all.

Phoned 111, they have referred me to out of hours so am waiting on an appointment (have to be within 6 hours apparently, we'll see)

Thanks all.
Question Author
Tsk Dave, naughty step for you :)
Question Author
They just rang, appointment in the Out of Hours at the hospital for 10.30.

I'll let you know how I got on.
Question Author
Doc convinced it's not antibiotic problem but instead a reaction to something else. So all's well (at the mo) in Chez Racoon.
Thanks for the feedback, what a sensible doctor.

If you remember, you had the same combination of drugs last year with no problem.
Good news. Probably something you ate. You could be allergic to chocolate :-)
