Nightmarish Toothache Thinking Of Taking 2 Cocodamol

I have been taking cocodamol 30/500 1 every so often over the last few days as I am in terrible pain with toothache despite being on antibiotics for an abscess but 1 is not really helping and I want to take 2 problem is 1 makes me feel a bit weird sort of euphoric and light headed so I don't know how 2 will make me feel. Anyone on this drug for pain

Perhaps taking the pain-killers regularly in accordance with the dosage instructions, rather than every so often, would be more effective ?

Co-codamol 8/500 mg is freely available over the counter. 30/500mg only by prescription. I'm sure Sqad would see nothing wrong with 2 x 30/500mg, though I know he prefers the old Ibuprofen.

gordie, like mamy I'm out , I hope the antibiotics take effect soon, and an extra 1/2 tablet helps , keep in mind as far as I know no one on this thread is a dentist,

Can you confirm that the antibiotics label says to avoid alcohol during the course of treatment?

If yes, then have you complied? In brief: Alcohol stops antibiotics doing their job.

Most antibiotics do not have such a warning. It is an urban myth that you should not take alcohol with antibiotics. However, some do, especially Flagyl, and apart from anything else to combine the two will make you violently sick. How do I know? Tried it, but only the once.

The only thing that touched the pain of a root abscess for me was DF118 (di-hydrocodeine) at least 60mg. It does make you *** bricks though.

I finish the course tomorrow night and I am teetotal so it wont be booze. I am beginning to feel marginally better the painkillers are taking effect I took them just over 1 hour ago. It takes them about an hour to work for me. I dont think I can wait until 28th to get it out not if it is like this

AP,I learnt that the hard way (eeek) in Hospital - would now always add a senokot to that level.

Be very wary of DF 118. Many years ago I was on those as a result of a serious accident. For 8 weeks I was living in the clouds, but when the hospital stopped them the crash landing was horrendous, and took me another 8 weeks to get over the withdrawal symptoms. As for passing bricks, I would have been glad to; in my case it was concrete girders.

four days is too long for antibiotics not to be working. I'd be trying to see a dentist in the morning (or you might find an emergency dentist overnight, but you might need to inherit an oilfield to pay for it). There are different sorts of antibiotics; if one doesn't work, another might. Till then I'd take another cocodamol.

Sensodyne tothpaste or clove oil on tooth will numb the pain. Both available from late night chemist or s'mkt.

There are a few other antibiotics for which there are good reasons to avoid drinking alcohol while taking them, including tinidazole, linezolid and ERYTHROMYCIN, but these interactions are so well-known that doctors give patients specific warnings.


I take 250mg Erythromycin twice per day and have done for the past 20 years to boost my immune system as I had my spleen removed many years ago. I have never been warned off alcohol and confess to having consumed a fair bit more alcohol than Erythromycin over the years.
