I started as a lodger in her house. It was purely practical that we did things like eat together and watch TV, but she also had two Irish setters and we began walking them together on weekends. Sadly both dogs died, one suddenly and the other through leukaemia, and I tried to be there for her – genuinely; there were no ulterior motives.
It brought us close and developed into a life-changing 5-year relationship, definitely the most important long-term one of my life. Just a shame it didn’t last – the ending was a huge mistake and by the time I realised it was too late to go back.
