Evelyn Roosevelt said to do something every day you are afraid of. I am getting a train from Edinburgh to Lancaster tomorrow night I booked it ages ago travelling first class and staying in a nice cheap hotel. It is a long time since I have been on a train but I need to do a practice run as I'm going to Manchester in June for my nephews first communion and I'm sick of missing out on things any tips on how to relax on the journey there and back staying 1 night then coming back the next evening. I'm taking my tablet with me as well as diazepam !!

It's gorgeous countryside, well most of the way, enjoy it!
Does everyone here know what the problem is? I don't see how anyone can give advice without knowing that.

Mum and dad are looking after her I know what you mean about the mind being like a war zone I'm just a bit scared of the train getting stuck somewhere and I am a bit claustrophobic I imagine all sorts of things that never happen I went to Edinburgh 2 weeks ago and imagined being stuck in a traffic jam never slept all night and it was such a waste of time the journey was fine worry it seems is a waste of time and it spoils my life so I'm trying to try and get over this.

Here you go, naomi.
No, Daisy, displacement activities will not overcome fear in my experience - they just put it off. Sooner or later the fears have to be faced. Best if done under your control and with back-up. I'm still scared of loads of stuff (governmental paperwork looms large) but I'll gird the old loins etc.. I've never found anything else works.
what- that the countryside is beautiful? Bloody Southerners!

What is displacement daisy
Aah, I had overlooked the issue of being supplied with wine in First Class.

I generally travel Cattle Class, where one takes ones own wine, or takes a chance with the teeny bottle of Echo Falls, or some such, available from the buffet trolley.
Gordie,
Have you tried EFT emotional freedom technique. Look been there got the badge, shirt etc so would not recommend anything unless I thought it might help. Nothing worse than doing something that doesn't work rather compounds the problem. I had anxiety for years then found someone that did EFT which massively reduced anxiety. For years I was in situations that I would of had a panic attack in but was relaxed and confident. I though am rather stupid I went looking for answers and ended up with the wrong therapist who opened up a can of worms.
It is rather a strange feeling being in a situation where you would of been anxious but feeling nothing.
I genuinely hope this works for you!!!
Much love!
You need to distract yourself gordie. Are you still taking the antidepressants? That's quite recent?

It has wifi on the train I will probably be on here a lot lol lol
Thinking of or doing something else so that you do not think about your fear in a situation where you feel to be in danger
Good idea, geordie.
Question Author
That sounds like a good idea daisy could I for example be thinking about acting in a play with a group of people like I've done in the past while on the train
Give us a running commentary of the journey, gordie.
Never actually found anything to dampen my fear of heights

Geordie, I am sure you will be fine. I always find keeping occupied helps, I read magazines and do crosswords. If you have something to think about, it will take your mind off your worries. I hope you have a lovely trip.
Lancaster is a beautiful city - when they chose to finish building it.
(Googles "where is lancaster?")
