Evelyn Roosevelt said to do something every day you are afraid of. I am getting a train from Edinburgh to Lancaster tomorrow night I booked it ages ago travelling first class and staying in a nice cheap hotel. It is a long time since I have been on a train but I need to do a practice run as I'm going to Manchester in June for my nephews first communion and I'm sick of missing out on things any tips on how to relax on the journey there and back staying 1 night then coming back the next evening. I'm taking my tablet with me as well as diazepam !!

Is it just trains that scare you or other types of travel as well.
Do you go on buses, use cars or taxis?
Now that's something to think about on your journey, geordie. Think about what your going to do when you reach Carnforth.

Let's face it. Most British seaside towns have seen better days.

tony - (i) leave it (ii) visit Booth's for some good wine - north side on the old A6, gordie (iii) visit Arnside and Silverdale (iv) Kirkby Lonsdale is really nice - and if you can get to the Barbon Inn or the Sun in Dent, they are like stepping back 30 years!
Spent holidays with my grandparents in Weston-Super-Mare as a young child . Loved the sand , ice cream with chocolate on the top, donkey carriage rides in the morning, donkey rides in the afternoon.
Wondering where the sea had gone at low tide.
My grandfather rolling up his trousers to reveal his white long johns beneath.
Being scared witless by Auntie Alice who could have given Queen Victoria a run for her money.

Brief encounter is my favourite film
Got to go, gordie. I wish you well for your exciting adventure tomorrow. Keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on. x
okay but what about things in the Uk as to visiting etc - churches, houses, woods, authors etc etc....could give some indication with a few pointers.
Thanks Tony.

// I'm just a bit scared of the train getting stuck somewhere and I am a bit claustrophobic I imagine all sorts of things that never happen I went to Edinburgh 2 weeks ago and imagined being stuck in a traffic jam//

gordiescotland1, think about it rationally. So what if the train does get stuck? There are all the facilities you could possibly need - a restaurant, toilets - fellow passengers to talk to if you want to - and you can even go for a walk to ward of feelings of claustrophobia …. so what's to worry about? Really? Take a book, a crossword puzzle, your ipad - relax and enjoy. There's nothing to be afraid of. x
A train is just a plane without wings, if it stops mid travel you'll still be alive, you won't need life jackets or air masks, you can walk about freely on a train and even open the window for some fresh air, stop worrying!
Just remember that if it gets too stressful you can get off at the next station, have a cup of tea or coffee (or hot chocolate if you are feeling frisky), walk around, regroup and catch the next train to your destination.
Easier than parachuting from a plane.
Had a bad experience on a train a couple of years ago, but either get on or not see the family. Family won .
Daisy, hot chocolate, frisky? Do tell?
Dislike tea, coffee gets boring, was only allowed hot chocolate as a treat when I was a child. There was a young man....
Ooh stop that train!
It's possible that you meant Eleanor Roosevelt wife of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt... regardless Mrs. Roosevelt did say " You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do..."
Maybe he has a fear of nasal PAs and waiting on rainy stations?
