What Causes 'brain Freeze'?

i just had a bowl of ice cream and brain freeze yet again, why does this happen? i always eat it very slowly because i know its going to happen, evey time with ice cream or on the very rare occasion i have a 'Mc D's milk shake. but never by drinking water or squash even when its loaded with ice cubes and been standing chilling for ages

LOL.
Quite a common and well recognised occurrence.
Cause..........unknown.
Theory: thought might be due due spasm of the blood vessels at the back of the throat and neck......similar to migraine.
Painful ++ but only lasts a minute or so.

Why ice cream and not water or squash even with ice..........don't know!

maybe with the Milkshake its the calorie intake partly I used to like them, even though you sound like an enphysema sufferer after sucking one through a straw, until I found out they are 1500 calories each.

The only thing I ever get brain freeze from is McDonalds milk shake, never from anything else.

I read putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth and holding it there for a minute or two helps.
