Gout And Diuretics
4 Answers
I've had heart failure, hypertension, cardiomyopathy and AF for the last five years or so. Fluid build-up has led to me being prescribed diuretics for most of that time. At the moment, I'm on 5mg Metolozone, 5mg Bumetaide and 100mg Spironolactone daily. I also take about a dozen other tablets daily including digoxin and bisoprolol.
I've been aware of the risk of getting gout with these high doses of diuretics and last week, my fear was realised in my left foot. The Gout was confirmed by two different doctors in two different A&E hospital departments last weekend. Uric acid levels were markedly raised in blood tests as was something called d-dimer. Colchicine 5mg was prescribed along with co-codamol. I stopped taking the diuretics temporarily.
I can't see my cardiologist for advice for a week or two, but I understand that some of these diuretics are less likely to cause or aggravate gout than the others. As fluid is building up in my body again due to the halt on the diuretics (almost one kg weight gain daily), I'd like to know which of the three diuretics would be best to take.
Thank you

\\ I'm on 5mg Metolozone, 5mg Bumetaide and 100mg Spironolactone daily.\\
That is a fair wack of diuretics which you clearly need to control your congestive heat failure due to your cardiovascular problems.
Your Gout may have nothing to do with your diuretics and i would not reduce your diuretic intake in any way.
treat the gout as directed.
