I have been given 2 tubes of cream to help with 'jock itch' and one side of the groin has a small open sore, the doctor gave me Hydrocortisone and Terbinafine Hydrochloride, she said NOT to apply one of the creams to the open sore and I can't remember which one, can you help me please, thanks.

Ah!....good point. Yes it does and thanks for the added information. My advice is changed.......use the hydrocortisone + terbinafine for the non ulcerated side and JUST terbinafine WITHOUT cortisone for the ulcerated side, which is a viral problem and may be made worse with hydrocortisone.

I really don't think that it matters.

If both groins have a diagnosis of "jock itch" which is a fungus infection, then both groins need terbinafine cream.

The open sore, doesn't sound typical of a fungus infection, so i should use the hydrocortisone for that side ( the open sore side)

I have suffered from herpes for many years and she seems to think the open sore could be herpes, does that make a difference?

and also given me a five day course of aciclovir 200mgs tablets, 5 a day.

Thankyou so much sqad, your advice is greatly appreciated. :)

saintpeter - I never would go against Sqad's word - I too suffer from jock itch but wouldn't go to see GP about it but after two years I overcame the embarrassment and she too offered me the cortisone. However when the itch becomes bad I use zinc and castor oil - a big tub from Poundland and it is fabulous for removing the itch. Don't know about putting it on the "open sore" but if it heals up - the zinc/castor oil does really give you relief. It is an awful thing as it seems to go on and on and on.

Thankyou jennyjoan, I started getting the jock itch only about 2 years ago and it keeps coming back, i've tried everything, daktarin, lamisil, canesten, medicated talcum, drying the area thoroughly with a towell and hair dryer, everything ... but it keeps returning. I will go out tomorrow and buy a tub of zinc/castor oil and when i've finished this course of treatment will use it if the itch comes back, thanks again. :)
by the way Peter - I inadvertently have come across a fantastic wash for down there - called Canesten Femine Wash - you change your face cloth for your upper body but different one for down there (I use a different colour) - just need a little drop and it is fabulous - is expensive at around £10 but worth every penny. Do think you can only get in the "big" Boots as it has just come out. Do get it and hopefully you will get peace. Jennyjoan. xx
Sudocrem also do mini sqeezy tubes which are more discreet in a bag or pocket when out and about. Usually in the baby section. I find using cotton buds to apply stuff like that, usually two together, mean less mess to wash off your fingers.
I used to get sores under my boobs and they hurt very much. I eventually tried Sudocrem and haven't had a problem in a long time.

I should add - I had many open sores and it was painful and itchy.

Do you apply it daily then wolf63 or just when it starts to itch?
It was a long time ago - I am sure that I just lashed it on for a few weeks until the sores sorted themselves out and then for a few weeks after that. It is all the moist/sweaty bits that get prone to the yeast infection. I am diabetic too so that would not have helped.

My doctor was okay with me using the Sudocrem instead of the Canestan. The Sudocrem is actually used as a nappy cream/ointment so it is really gentle. I wish you luck - but it must be nearly ten years since I had a major problem.

I am not at all sure if my spelling of the creams/gunk are correct.
well as a good night - Sudocreme did not work for me but each to their own.
Jock Itch is not all due to a single type of organism.

I had it and Canesten (prescribed by a doctor) was pretty much useless because some organisms are completely resistant to its active ingredient. They promote their product use excessively and even have a washing additive, so resistance is no surprise.

A single application of Tinaderm (Tolnaftate) almost cleared it up. A few more and it was gone. All that remained were a couple of spots which were cured by Canesten. Presumably these were the Tolnaftate resistant colonies.
