Depends upon for what condition the nephrectomy is to be performed.
Routine nephrectomy for stones or cancer can be performed by laparoscopic approach.
However, if the patient is fat, or had previous surgery resulting perhaps in adhesions or is a bad cardio pulmonary risk (Bad heart, bad chest) then the front open approach is better.
So, in answer to your question, it is up to the surgeon.
