Black And Greens

When I was a child, many of the women I knew were on 'Black and Greens' for their 'nerves'. A lot of ladies seemed to have 'bad nerves'.

What were they taking?

I'd guess Valium (diazepam). They did come in black and green capsules as well as other forms. Got that from Google, I don'tknow.

^^^ Diazepam might well be more likely if, indeed, they were available as black and green tablets (which I was unaware of), since it was for many years the standard tranquillizer prescribed for anxiety.

They were obviously some form of anti-anxiety drug. Everyone seemed to be on them. Stressful times, the fifties and sixties!

As a child back in the 1960s I often remember being told so and so has had a 'nervous breakdown' which I now assume is a name for a 'mental health issue' .

The change certainly was ummmm...poor women.

My Mum had black and green capsules when my Dad left home Tilly. No idea at the time what they were for, apart from they made her feel better

I would guess it was Valium. I've never heard of the term Black and Greens, but lots of women were put on Valium "for their nerves" in those days.

Mohne is correct, re-googling last night I found it was Librium but didn't bother posting. Librium and Valium were like brother and sister though weren't they?
